Bangladesh wants to develop ‘very good’ relations with US: Momen

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said that Bangladesh wants to build a “very good” relationship with the US in a “constructive and positive” manner.

He told reporters at his ministry on Monday (January 9) following the visit of some top US officials to Bangladesh.

The foreign minister said, ‘We are very happy that our constructive communication with the United States is increasing.’

Currently, Rear Admiral Eileen Laubacher, Senior Director of South Asia Affairs of the US National Security Council is on a visit to Bangladesh. US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Relations Donald Lu is scheduled to visit Bangladesh next week.

He said, ‘We are very happy that they are coming to this country.’

Momen said that since both Bangladesh and the United States believe in common values and ideals such as respect for democracy and human rights, Dhaka wants to build constructive relations with Washington. Bangladesh maintains multifaceted relations with the US, including trade and investment, and the two countries work together in areas such as peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, climate issues and maritime security.

He said that when a friendly country raises an issue or suggests a matter through the proper channel, Dhaka always takes steps to fill the gap or to point out the weakness on its part.

As an example in this regard, Momen mentions the necessary steps to be taken in the field of Digital Security Act (DSA).

Still, he said, ‘If there is any deficiency, if they inform us formally, we will address it. And we are very positive about this.’

Noting that there has been no missing incident in Bangladesh in the last three years, the Foreign Minister termed it as a great progress in this regard.

Citing the example of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Momen said, ‘Five fingers are not equal. If someone makes a problem, we look into it.’

In response to a question about security cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States, he said that the welfare of the people is the main concern of the current government.

The minister said that security is also important to maintain the economic development of the country. He said, ‘They (US) have helped us to make the sea border more secure.’
